2015 in Travels

2015-year in travel-1800px

I knew 2015 would be a busy year for traveling, so I came up with an idea for a photo project that would end up meaning a lot to me the more I traveled as the year went by. I don’t know how I came up with this actually. I just suddenly had a vision for a photo, where instead of having myself face the camera with the view behind me, I preferred to be facing the view with my back to the camera instead. As if to say I’m always looking and moving forward, ready for the next destination, the next chapter, the next life experience.

This photo project is special to me because my dream travels in 2015 were achieved out of my own hard work… And I’m fucking proud of that. I wasn’t at first, because I listened to the negative people who spewed their bitterness at me, saying I didn’t even really work for anything at all. But I did. For years I worked and now I’ve reaped what I’ve sown and it’s a sweet, sweet feeling. Especially because I grew up in a large family, and I was someone who constantly compared herself to her spoiled rotten peers and wondered why I couldn’t have everything easy like they did. I admit I grew up sometimes thinking I was so entitled, that I deserved the best, and although I was always grateful and knew I had enough and appreciated my parents for providing me with all my needs (and sometimes wants), I couldn’t help but compare because I had days where I thought it wasn’t enough. Why could he/she have all this in a snap but I couldn’t? Why couldn’t my family be stinking rich so I can travel the world without having to work hard for it? Oh, how ignorant and immature. But I grew up, learned that life doesn’t give you handouts, and if you want something then you go out there and get it done yourself. Then I had tastes of sweet tiny successes, followed by that irreplaceable triumphant feeling of working hard for something you want and reaping the benefits, and that’s when I knew I could have anything I wanted without having to rely on anyone else. And it was such a good feeling. When you work for the things you want, there’s more value in the experiences.

(And yes, before the haters come attack me, I’m well-aware of my circumstances. I’m 25, barely independent while I live in the 2nd floor of my grandpa’s apartment where I don’t have to pay for utilities, only to feed myself, but I’m only halfway into my journey of being an adult but at least I’m halfway rather than stuck or barely just beginning. And yes, I can afford to throw my money into my personal travels because I’m lucky enough that I don’t have any other responsibilities but hey, that’s just the card I was dealt with. Is that unfair? Not really. The same way it’s not unfair that there are people out there my age who live entirely on their parents money so they don’t have to deal with bills or groceries, but that’s their situation to deal with, that’s the card they’re dealt with.) (Look at me being all defensive, but I know the haters still lurk, they were rampant before I left for Europe saying it would never happen. They’ve been quiet since, I guess kicking themselves in the ass for being wrong this entire time? Wherever you guys are, I hope you’ve found happiness. It’s 2016. It’s time you guys did something for yourselves other than troll around my social media accounts :-) )

And so this photo collage project was born. I only had a mental vision of what the final collage would look like, but when I finally put it all together today, I was surprised by how cool they actually looked together! I think I’ll continue doing this for all my travels. Unfortunately, my collage is incomplete since I’m missing photos from Bruges, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Jungfraujoch, Wengen & Grindelwald. Clearly I lack discipline, I honestly forget to take photos for this project 80% of the time. Haha Also, credit to all the people who helped me take these photos! <3

As for for 2016, I don’t really have any huge travel plans yet. Last year my friends and I were deciding on Japan in October, to visit a friend who moved there. And if our funds allow it, Gab and I plan to visit NYC around the holidays. I’m also thinking I would travel a bit locally this year, while I can, because Gab and I have huge plans for 2017 that involve going to the US of A! :-)

Where do you think I should travel to this 2016? Any suggestions would be cool! The more specific, the better <3

This is so awesome, Camie! You really inspire me to travel and explore more! Can you blog tips on how to save up for college students like me and how to ask permission from my parents since they think I’m too young to travel on my own (I’m 18, btw)? Thanks! :)

Loved reading this post, especially the fine print, Camie. Honestly, you didn’t need to defend yourself, but I know it feels a whole lot better when you prove people who doubted you wrong. I admire your honesty, and how you dealt with things maturely. :) Cheers to 2016! Here’s to more adventures for you and Gab!

P.S. I was so jealous of your snaps from Las Piñas/Alabang the other day. I so miss home! :(

My younger self used to be so jealous of other kids who traveled without having to worry about the money. Now I am 25 and proud that all my travels were funded by me! But like you, I don’t look down on anyone who is fortunate enough to be able to constantly travel because one way or another, their parents/sponsors surely worked hard as well to be able to provide for their loved ones! Props to you for encouraging everyone to work hard for their dreams! :)

  • Reply Hani Lutfi 6 January 2016 at 10:38 am

Love this photo! I used to be just like you too, I had friends who don’t need to work hard for the things they want. Then last year I got a job and it felt so good to actually book my own plane tickets, plan my own itinerary to go to Korea this May! :)

PS. Loving the new header! <3

This is amzing ate Camie! I have always wanted to travel to Europe though with my salary right now, I think it’ll be a long time before I get to accomplish that. You inspired me to travel more! Also, nvrmnd the haters, you’re living a good life while they’re trolling on yours. Happy 2016!

  • Reply Mei 6 January 2016 at 12:23 pm

I also used to envy these kids who never had to worry about money because they get everything from their family. I also used to hate the fact that they’re even too proud of whatever they have, even if they’re from their parents naman. Good thing I realized it’s their lives and the time will come they will learn to value money if they earn it on their own. I focused on myself more and I felt a lot more better! It feels so great having to support myself 101% all the time without getting any help from anyone. I even felt more proud that I don’t only support myself but I also provide financial assistance to my family. Not that I’m required to, but because they deserve it.

I’m happy for you, that you also get the reward you definitely deserve for all the hard work! And yes, even though you are just starting out in this adult stuff, at least you got some improvements! Way to go, Camie! :)

2015 is also my year of travel, having visited different provinces in the PH. You may look at the places I’ve been to in this post: http://wp.me/p5Dw2x-4X and I hope you also get to visit those places! PH has a lot of beautiful places! :) I still have no plans to visit any other country for now because I want to explore PH more. But someday I hope to visit those countries you’ve also been too! :)

Happy new year Camie! Wishing you a great 2016 ahead. To more adventures! :)

Ate Camie, I’m so proud of you! I just graduated and I’m dealing with haters who think I’m never gonna make it in life, and it’s really hard to move forward when you don’t know what’s gonna happen next unlike in school all your problems are focused on how to pass all the subjects. The worst part pala is when most of your haters are kamag anaks pa! Sucks. This post really inspired me that one day even if its hard now and even if people think I dont have a real job, I know I’m actually doing something and gaining experiences!

  • Reply Corinth 6 January 2016 at 2:05 pm

Why would people hate on somebody’s dream to travel?! UGH! Well, I’m so happy for everything you’ve accomplished. I’m so happy because you were able to prove those haters wrong! I’m so glad that your traveling didn’t come quite “easy” on you because it really is the truth that it feels so much fulfilling when you achieve things out of your own sweat. I wish I could tell myself that in regards to working out. I love this photo project of yours and I am STILL looking forward to the rest of your travel posts! If ever you and Gab do fly to New York, let me be the first one to know because I would love to meet you there!!!

I admit: I talked trash about you to my friends, saying that you have pretty pictures because you can afford to go to pretty places and take them but you should travel locally. I would love to see your creativity when you have the ugly congested streets of Manila and make them pretty, take that as a challenge. Nonetheless, I will support your ventures. Good luck. Don’t take anything for granted.

    • Reply Camie Juan 6 January 2016 at 5:00 pm

Thanks for your honesty? Also, why are you challenging my creativity? It was never about that in the first place…? I think you missed the whole point of this post. It was about me working hard for my wants and dreams.

As for Manila, I wont take you up on that challenge because I’ve nothing to prove to you, and there would be no point. But if you’d like, you can dig through my IG for photos I’ve posted taken around Manila (skylines, places, etc) and judge for yourself? “Ugly congested streets” will ALWAYS be ugly and congested, so why are you throwing me a “challenge”?

Your issue with me is so random, too. My travels and experiences are just for that, to travel and experience. It’s not about taking pretty photos. I’m not even a photographer or anything like that. It’s JUST photos I’ve taken. If that’s how you see it (I only take pretty photos when I’m abroad) then that’s your problem, not mine. You can keep that perspective of yours, ain’t my business how you want to perceive me. :)

Thanks for wishing me luck, and me? Take things for granted? Did you read my entire post? I could never.

      • Reply tangereine 6 January 2016 at 5:48 pm

I’m apologizing if it came out as condescending (this is why I hate the internet, in my head it sounded nice which should be a huge problem to me now) but I get your point. About ‘don’t take things for granted’ I know you don’t. What I’d like to say is to keep doing it (I have read this entire blog entry). This may seem like a pathetic excuse. It is. I don’t really know you personally so maybe there’s a huge misunderstanding – I, anonymous, you – a collage of pictures and blog entries. What I’m trying to say in my other comment is (in a better tone): let us see Manila through your eyes. It’s not that wrong to assume you’re a photographer (you do have a great Instagram gallery). And I’d love to see your take on an ugly congested Manila. But I get it why you don’t want to either. Manila is just one city in the millions around the world. If it were up to me, I’ll go around the world and never come back (years here are enough). And Manila is UGLY. I’m jealous of you!

Also, do not defend yourself against me or anyone. You’re just making the most out of whatever cards you have. I’m sorry if I offended you. I’m sorry if it seemed like I was trying to challenge you. If you’re looking for suggestions, South America is wonderful.

  • Reply Nina 6 January 2016 at 10:26 pm

Congratulations on this trip, Camie! I am currently a third year college student and I’ve long been dreaming of going abroad. I feel the same way too. Why can’t travel be available to anyone who wants to, right? Right now, my goal is to go on a student exchange program. My university allows it, but it’s quite a long process. As my mom said, it won’t matter if I am not ready even though I still want to. I will apply for an exchange program next year. Hope I get accepted haha!

I don’t have 2016 suggestions for you, but I do have for 2017 since I’ve been to the USA! Since you also love Harry Potter, I suggest you visit Orlando, Florida for the Universal Studios. It has two parks: Islands of Adventure, and Universal Studios Orlando (which I think is the common theme park for SG, LA, and Osaka). Both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Diagon Alley can only be found in Universal Orlando as of this writing. Sobrang sakto when we visited last December 2014 kasi dun pa lang naging available yung hot version ng butterbeer!!! Super sarap but extremely sweet din! Loved the frozen version kahit malamig nung December :) Sadly, there are no direct flights from Manila to Orlando. We had to go to LA first, since my uncle is based there, to drop off our baggage, then fly to Orlando a few days later. I can suggest an agent (US based and swear, 100% legit siya. I can ask my mom for the info about our Universal Studios and Disney World packages. The agent booked everything for us and sobrang hassle free. You can definitely book and plan your own travel but she really helped us a lot!).

Syempre if pupunta na ring Orlando, magDisney World na rin! Super laki, as in there were four theme parks and each theme park was the size (or might be even bigger!) of the HK Disneyland. I still can remember everything talaga. Syempre the highlight was Harry Potter haha! To tell you the truth, I cried at the foot of the Hogwarts castle as I was absorbing every magical moment I spent there during our last night in Universal. The castle looked just how it was in the movies. Sobrang haunting yet super beautiful!!!

Okay, sobrang haba na! Ending it with this: I would love to see the world with my own hard work, even though tears will be part of it in the future. Magiging sobrang satisfied ako pag naging rich tita ako (joke, baka hindi naman!) tapos nadala ko buong pamilya ko abroad to travel haha!

You’re such an inspiration! Please continue to inspire us, and share your travel posts to us, if you’re okay with it :) Happy New Year, Camie! Wish you’ll get to travel and explore more of the world!

    <3 Nina

Your photos are amazing! I love the concept and I’m already thinking about how I can copy you and do them myself haha. Don’t worry about the negativity. There will always be people who have sour feelings about those who have different privileges than they do, but we can’t control the thoughts of others and they have to deal with that themselves. You be you, and be proud. You’re living a beautiful life.

I’ve been a reader of yours since your Euro trip. I have to say those pictures are lovely!
Don’t mind your haters, I think they’re the people who has a lot of insecurties in themselves and quite unfortunate people that don’t have what you’ve got e.g. to travel to diiferent countries. That’s why they’re trying to bring you down (to their level) and you shouldnt let that happen. I must say you have been to most Europe country than me considering I live in England. Haha. I should remind myself to travel more, if only I don’t have bills to pay lol. I think people don’t realise that people have different upbringing and it happens for them that they aren’t well-off enough to go to places you’ve been. It’s not the case of how old you are or being dependent on your family. It’s how you want to live your life and create memories (photos) that you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. And I think in your case you are living that dream of yours, so well done! I suggest travel more in the Philippines and show everyone the beauty of it. :)

  • Reply Clariesque 7 January 2016 at 8:41 pm

Hi Camie! Go visit Indonesia, specifically Bali/Lombok. You can find many beautiful beaches there (especially in Lombok! It’s still more virgin(?) Than Bali’s in general) with beautiful sunset! The culture there is also so unique since unlike other most islands in Indonesia, the majority of the people is a Hindu people (in Bali) with sooo much unique tradition, and also food!

  • Reply Jomil Adrielle 8 January 2016 at 3:23 pm

I am so happy for you Camie! It’s actually an achievement for you to be able to travel for free because of your work. Like as what you said before, it’s one of the perks and you worked hard to be able to have that privilege! I love the photos! Anyway, I am suggesting for you to travel around the Philippines. I am suggesting Sorsogon and Batanes :)
