The 3 Ways I Motivate Myself to get Stuff Done

I am innately lazy. The president of Procrastination Nation. The Queen of excuses and I’ll-just-do-it-tomorrow phrases. But if I want to progress in work and life, I need to find strategies that will help break myself away from putting things off, because if I didn’t, I would never get anything done. Ever.

My days are usually so busy with blog work (and now video editing), articles to draft, emails to read and reply to, client meetings or attending events — and so exerting double the effort in my daily tasks is not something new to me. It’s just sometimes, I need a little extra motivation to keep going! Here are the three ways I motive myself to get stuff done:

  1. Starting my day with a hearty breakfast and a to-do list. One of my favourite times of the day is waking up and enjoying the quiet relaxing morning making breakfast and preparing for my day. Recently I’ve been having avocados on toast and a cup of coffee to fuel and energise me before my day starts. I’ll sit down with my breakfast while I create my to-do list. This simple task gets me in the productive mood, and even though sometimes long to-do lists get daunting.
  2. Starting with something simple and small to get productivity going. I’ll cross off the simplest task on my list first, just to get the ball rolling. Maybe it’ll be paying my bills online, or scheduling a post, or replying to an email. I find that anytime you start something, it’s hard to stop and before I know it, I’m crossing things off my to-do list left and right!
  3. And finally, I make deals with myself aka The Reward System. Basically, I’ll remind myself that if I do certain tasks, then I can proceed to reward myself afterwards. Be it big or small, there’s always an equivalent. The bigger the task, the bigger the reward. So for example, I finish 4 big tasks out of 5, I can marathon a TV show on Netflix while binging on Pepero Double Dip!

The Pepero Double Dip comes in two flavours, chocolate and strawberry, and they’re both dipped in white chocolate, hence the “double dip” name. I personally love the strawberry flavour but the chocolate is just as sinful. I love how the chocolate is extra rich and creamy, giving you a pretty good chocolate to stick ratio. They’re currently my favourite thing to snack on.

So far, these three ways I motivate myself has helped me, or else I probably wouldn’t be here blogging for a living. Do you do any of these three as well? What keeps you motivated? I’d love to hear your suggestions and what you think! Let’s chat in the comments below :-)

To-do lists are my life-saver. And I feel accomplised checking things of the list that I just want to do them all! Reward system is cool. Haven’t tried the double dip Pepero but I love munching on the cookies and cream one!

Sometimes I’ll write stuff I just finished doing before I do my to-do list, just so I can cross them off. HAHA

I LOVE Pepero! It was always my snack back at work that my co-workers would call me Pepero I love the chocolate with almond bits though I haven’t tried strawberry yet!

It’s so hard sometimes to motivate myself, but what you said in your second point–to pick a small task to get the ball rolling definitely helps!

Yeah, sometimes something as transferring photos from my SD card to my laptop gets me started on editing photos, then uploading them, then embedding them on a post and then writing about it. Domino effect talaga.

Rewards system works with me too! I’d always tell myself, weekend is coming, and I can sleep all I want. Haha Pepero is a good reward too! I like the chocolate of course :)

Also, I make sure to take breaks. I maximize my 1 hr break at work by watching an episode of a tv series haha and may 15-min breaks by browsing throough social feeds. :)

I have a hard time taking breaks because when I do, it’s usually tuloy tuloy na. It’s terrible. Haha If I take breaks, it’s to eat mostly! :P

I love sticking to planners and checklists; the feeling of checking a task alone is so satisfying in my opinion. Also, pepero is life in a box and one isn’t enough, not gonna lie.

OMGash Mille! This will be the 1st time I ever wrote on your blog because I always wanted you to have your own “space” . . . but sorry I just had to write. I didn’t realize how much you are soo like me pala! I thought I was the QUEEN of procrastination . .evah, but you are the PRESIDENT haha!! I do get ALOT of important things done but it’s just those “other” things that need to get done but I always tend to put it off — and that gets me grrrr! Just this morning I was telling Sam to please help me get motivated to finish all my work! But you’re so right on about THE 3 WAYS! I forget about 1 & 2 and go straight to 3! haha! Thanks for the reminders my dear Pepero addict! :-)

I want the Pepero in strawberry dip. ☺ I love the way you write your sponsored posts for it doesn’t read like a sponsored one at all. To-do list helps me get the stuff done and I also reward myself like you.

    • Reply Camie Juan 18 April 2016 at 11:13 pm

It’s my favorite, while my boyfriend loves the chocolate one. At least we don’t have to share our favorites hehehe

      And thank you :)

No.1 is a very nice tip! Though the problem is how do you motivate yourself to wake up early if you’re just not a morning person? Huhuhu. I agree so much with no.2! When you feel lazy or not in the mood to do any tasks, just start doing things and you’ll find that you’ll run out of things to do cause you basically have done everything in your to-do list. Hahaha! Thanks for this Camie! :)

    • Reply Camie Juan 29 April 2016 at 2:25 pm

I think you just have to force yourself! I was never a morning person either, until I moved to my condo and my windows lit up my room every morning and I was too lazy to get curtains. I noticed that waking up early gave me more opportunity to get more stuff done and be productive, and at the end of the day, I always feel this sort of satisfaction. :)

I agree with what you said about to do lists. It gives you that sense of accomplishment once you tick something off it! They’re lifesavers especially for someone who tends to get distracted so easily. Someone just like me haha!
