Lipsticks For Every Skin Tone

After scouring the web doing research on which lipstick shades fit every kind of skin tone, I decided to illustrate my top 10 favorite lipstick shades, which I think will truly flatter any pale, olive, warm, cool, dark, tan skin tone you may have!

One of my makeup goals is to purchase every lipstick shade on this list… It’s a lot, but hey, a girl can dream! I already own the Rimmel London Kate 01 red lipstick and it’s absolutely gorgeous on the lips! Definitely one of my favorites, and would use it over my MAC Russian Red any day, because it’s not as drying!

I always get inquiries about which lipstick shade would look good on so-and-so skin tones. I honestly don’t know, I have yet to truly understand which shades go with warm/cool undertones. I took it upon myself to finally do some research and scoured beauty websites who have tried and tested it… I, for one, don’t really follow any rules when it comes to what makeup colors I should wear that best fit me. I always believed that you can get away with wearing any kind of shade of lipstick (or makeup, for that matter) as long as you wore it with confidence. I don’t remember a time I ever looked at someone and thought, “Hey, their lipstick shade doesn’t suit them.” because majority of people who wear lipstick, wear it with utmost confidence. It’s all about loving what you’re wearing wearing it well that matters :)

Just remember, makeup is a form of self expression! You don’t always have to follow rules ;)

Aww man, I don’t have any from your list! I don’t even know what my skin tone is. Haha! I only have a few tubes from MAC. Ruby Woo, Candy Yum Yum, Maleficent… What’s the equivalent finish of that opaque on MAC though?

By the way, great illustration! So pretty!

Funny that we own the same two lipsticks and I always go for the Rimmel Kate one because Russian Red by Mac is SO drying (literally chapped lips for a week after I wear it)! I really want to try Revlon Black Cherry x

This is why we’re friends, Daria <3 Haha

I’m not into make-up, really, but this post just made me want to try using it. Also, if you don’t mind me asking, Camie, were you the one who painted this? So adorable! :)

I think when it comes to finding the right lipstick for yourself you just have to keep on experimenting. It is all about preference. I have a tan skintone and I love a good dark berry lip stain so I am currently in love with Topshop’s Lip & Cheek Stain in Bitten Berry. A more luxurious one would be Stila’s Lip Tint in Cranberry. For a nude, I love Tarte’s Lipsurgence Matte Lip Tint in Hope.

Thanks for your input! I agree, it’s all about experimenting. I had a phase where I bought so much lipstick, and right now I only use about 4-5 shades out of the 15 I have. But at least those shades I absolutely love!

Going to check that Mac Lustre See Sheer. I’m on a hunt of the perfect coral lipstick for me. Hope we have this here.

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:22 pm

Same! For some reason any coral lipstick I try turns out looking pink on me :| I think I need something more orange-y based.

Wow Camie, your illustrations are gorgeous! I have the Revlon Black Cherry and although the color is gorgeous (it’s a good dupe for Mac’s Cyber), it goes on too sheer and it’s difficult to build up the color, especially if you want it really dark. You can really see the deep lines and wrinkles on your lips when you use this so it’s not really a great find for me, at least.

Wet ‘N Wild’s Vamp It Up is better (and cheaper too) and it’s darker and has great coverage and feel. Nyx’s Transylvania Soft Matte Lip Creme is also another good choice. But for those who want to try the vamp look perfect for our (pretend) fall season, Revlon’s Rum Raisin is a great lipstick to start with. :)

      Thanks, Mimi <3

Yeah, I heard that the Revlon Black Cherry is hard to build :( Shame because the color is so nice! Maybe if you use a dark lip liner along with it, it might help? What do you think?

      • Reply Mimi 20 October 2014 at 4:48 pm

I know! I haven’t tried it with dark lip liner as a base yet. Hopefully it helps! Thanks for the suggestion, Camie! :) But for now, I’m using my Wet ‘N Wild Vamp It Up lippie and it’s the same, if not darker shade. You should try it too! <3

OMFG! (I hope I’m allowed to say this here LOL) You are an amazing illustrator! The shade of the Revlon one’s looks amazing. xx

Thanks Kenny!!! <3 Of course you can say OMFG. I curse like crazy too :P

Matching colors with skin tones confuses me, too. I’ve wanted to research more but I just don’t have the time (or maybe I do but I always get sidetracked whenever I’m on the internet LOL)

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:20 pm

HAHAHA! I know that feel. I also get sidetracked all the time. Like now, Im supposed to start on illustrations but I’m here replying to comments :P

I dont think I’ll ever understand matching lipsticks with skin tones. But then again, I’ve always believed in just wearing whatever you damn want! Screw the rules, ya know?

Great post Camie! I’ve always avoided bold colored lipsticks since well, they are too bold for me. But I would love to try L’Oreal Spice afterl all it is the fall season. Even though there’s actually no fall season here in the Philippines. :D

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:17 pm

Technically we do have fall season for makeup trends/fashion even if we don’t get the season itself! It also gets quite cold naman around this time of year, so we sort of still have it ;) EMBRACE FALL! Haha

  • Reply The Creative Lass 15 October 2014 at 1:45 pm

I don’t own any of these! Haha. I don’t use lipstick that much because my lips are dry. I am taking care of it by moisturizing though. Right now I only use lip balm with tint to add color to my lips.

I hope when my lips don’t get dry anymore, I would be able to use at least one of these lipsticks. Thanks for the guide! :)

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:16 pm

      You’re welcome! :)

I get dry lips too. I exfoliate at least 4-5 times a week, and also use my Elizabeth Arden Miracle Cream which HELPS A LOT for moisturizing :)

Hey Camie, I’ve been reading your blog for a while now but it’s my first time to comment and can I please just say that you’re one heck of a talented lady. That is an amazing illustration and, love your lipstick choices. I completely agree with the Rimmel London in Kate 01 and, it’s an inexpensive version compared to MAC’s Russian Red. NARS Dolce Vita is another huge love of mine as well.

Have you tried MAC’s Hug Me? It’s a pretty nude shade that’s perfect for any skin tone as well but it dries out so I like to slather on some Neutrogena lip gloss over it :)

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:27 pm

This is so sweet, Sara! Thank you! <3

Nars is so expensive for me, but maybe in the future I'll start splurging on high-end makeup! I think I might have to if I'm going to become a makeup artist. Haha I think MACs lipsticks, especially matte ones, will ALWAYS be drying. I use my Elizabeth Arden Miracle Cream on my lips before using any matte MAC lippies!

I’m not really a fan of lippies but this will come handy! Thanks Camie! I really find it helpful. And you drew the illustrations? Good job! :D x

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:25 pm

Hi Alissa! Yes, I did illustrate them myself! Thank you <3

  • Reply Yani 16 October 2014 at 9:33 pm

Very nice illustration, Camie! I wanna try that Rimmel London in Kate 01 since I don’t have much dark lippie colors! actually, I have only one dark color! Hehe

    • Reply Camie Juan 17 October 2014 at 8:12 pm

Thanks, Yani! :) The Kate 01 is absolutely gorgeous! I also have like 1-2 dark lip colors lang rin, I wanna build up my collection more!

  • Reply Dani 21 October 2014 at 4:16 pm

Thanks a lot for this, Camie! Sobrang nahahassle lang ako to have to try lippies before paying for it. Eh ayaw ko din naman to end up looking like I don’t know what I’m doing! This is super helpful!
