If you don’t know what it is, heard about it, read about it on your Facebook/Twitter feeds but don’t really know what it’s all about, you can read this and be informed: http://www.gov.ph/2012/09/12/republic-act-no-10175/
Now, my two cents.
I believe that this Cyber Crime law makes a whole lot of sense. I believe it’s about time the government came up with a law that targets cyber crimes such as hacking, fraud, identity theft, copyright infringement, etc etc to name a few. We are a country whose people spends half of their time on the cyber world, it’s only fitting to have a law against cyber crimes. But libel? To suppress freedom of speech because one dumbass senator got butthurt over the opinions of netizens around the country about what a huge moron he is? Suddenly the people have to suffer for his bruised ego? I don’t think so. And here we have a president who approved this law without, I assume, so much as reading everything. If he did, he would’ve known that freedom of speech, which is what his parents fought for, would ultimately be taken away. Having Sotto put in the part of libel in the Cyber Crime Law is bad enough, but having President Aquino approve it is the cherry on top of it all.
50 million pesos, all for this law. Can you imagine? Imagine what 50 million pesos can do, to build more schools or hospitals where we need them. Instead, it’s 50 million pesos to shut us up. Where exactly will this P50M even go? Tracking down Anonymous Philippines? That should be fun, they’ll hack into your systems and fuck shit up and you won’t even know what you got yourselves into. If you take us down one by one, you best believe an uprising will happen, you can’t silence an outspoken nation bounded by unity, especially when it comes to government officials who try to bully or powertrip.
What’s even sadder is how I’m almost 80% sure that even though this law will take effect tomorrow, months from now it’s like this law wouldn’t have existed. They can’t even put away the right people who should be put away (corrupt officials), what makes this any different?
I’ll continue to write what I want to write, say what I want to say. I’m entitled to my own opinion and I will not be silenced by an idiot named Tito Sotto, who by the way can kiss my ass.
