“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” I build walls because I’m afraid of hurting people. Nobody breaks my heart, but I can’t reassure the same for you. I can only give so much, but the moment an inkling of a feeling gets involved I instantly retreat. Maybe it’s because I don’t trust myself. I need to get my shit together before I let anyone else in, and that will take a while. Maybe. I don’t know. I’ve been there and I know what it’s like, to love and to hope and to feel, and then for it to be taken away in an instant. I wouldn’t wish the same for anyone else out there. They say what doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger. Be that as it may, I don’t want to be the one responsible for your pain. It’s not you, it’s me. It’s really me. For once that statement, that claim is true. It’s not you, it’s me. Think of it as an early warning sign right before a natural disaster, you can get away before it hits, retreat to a safe place, somewhere we don’t have to question or to hurt but just to be. I’m not going to chase hurricanes or run into burning buildings with you or for you, but I’ll be here waiting in case you need me. You’re safe here.
