Things I Need for my Typical Work Day

Yes, as a freelancer, most days I work from home. In bed. In my pajamas. Under the covers. With my laptop open. Sometimes with a plate of food nearby. My bed becomes my sleep/eat/work station. It’s definitely not healthy, but that’s the reality of freelance life. On the other hand, I work outside at least 2-3 times a week and so I’ve got my typical must-haves when I venture out into the world to actually live.

My work days typically consist of hitting up Starbucks, setting up my table for editing vlogs, sometimes a meeting with a client or two is thrown into the mix, and on some days it’s a shoot for a new project or brand I’m working with. Everytime I leave the house, no matter what I’ll be doing that day, there are things I just will never leave home without. I wanted to show you guys what my typical work day needs look like, and what it usually consists of.

Last Thursday I had a talent evaluation meeting with my agency Nuffnang Philippines. A talent evaluation is where my handlers will let me know how well I did the previous year, my strengths as a blogger/social media influencer, what I need to improve on, how much I earned, how many projects/campaigns I completed, and other career stuff. It’s really interesting and I got a glimpse of what what I’m doing well at and what I need to improve on. Apparently, being open to more brands is something I need to work on. Oops! I arrived at Starbucks at the Fort, ready to start my workday. I’ve laid out what I usually have around me while I’m working. Here are the things I never leave the home without/always need:

1. My laptop. Obvious reason being this is where I edit my vlogs. I almost never leave home without my laptop, not unless I’m headed off to a social event.

2. My Toshiba 1TB hard drive. Half of my life is in this drive.  I should probably get another one so I don’t have to put all my important files in one place. I got my Toshiba hard drive from the airport before I left Tokyo last year. I love it because it’s fast, reliable and simple looking. It’s also lightweight and easy to bring around.

3. Marshall headphones. They’re noise cancelling so they’re perfect for when I’m editing vlogs. They’re also comfortable to wear, so editing vlogs for 5 hours straight don’t hurt my ears or make them itchy unlike the apple earphones I used to use.

4. Black coffee over ice & a veggie sandwich. It’s currently my favorite things to order at Starbucks while working. Black coffee keeps me awake, unlike other kinds of coffee, and the Starbucks veggielicious sandwich is filling and healthy.

5. Sketching notebook + my erasable colored pencil. In between vlog editing, I always take breaks and try to do a quick sketch, or I doodle to help keep creativity flowing. I recently discovered erasable colored pencils from Prismacolor which I now prefer to use over normal lead pencils for sketching.

6. Crabby Wallet + house keys. I have two kinds of wallets. One is where I keep all my cash and coins, and the other is where I keep my atm/credit cards & keys. I like using the crabby wallet because of its functionality. The canvas wallet features a lobster claw keychain for my house keys, and a rubber lined vertical band to keep my atm cards, money and phone in place. I like slim wallets because they’re not tempting to the wandering eyes of certain people, being in Manila tends to make you extra cautious for your safety, you know what I mean? So if I’m busy working at a public place, I like knowing my wallets are as inconspicuous as possible.

7. Popband hair ties. When I’m working, sometimes I just need to get my hair out of my face. I have this weird urge to always tie my hair up and just be free of all distractions. I’m like Violet Baudelaire from A Series of Unfortunate Events, except she ties her hair when she’s thinking of inventing something, while I tie my hair when it’s time to get to work. I never leave home without a hair tie on my wrist.  Popbands are perfect for everyday use because they’re designed in different prints & styles that won’t ruin any outfit or accessories. They keep your hair away from dents (pet peeve!) and untying your locks won’t leave you with ripped hair.

8. Comfortable clothes + shoes. My go-to outfit is something I can easily move around in, but if I need to go to a last minute meeting or shoot for blog posts or products, I can still look cute. Last Thursday I wore my cute army green overalls from Cotton On, and my comfy white sneakers from Topshop.

9. My Sherpani Olive Birch backpack. For work days, even if it’s just sitting in a coffee shop working, I still like to look my best. You never know who you’ll run into, and for my line of work, I always have to look decent. I love my Sherpani Olive Birch backpack because it fits everything I need, while still looking cute and totally wearable for casual days, work days or even quick trips to the gym. My favorite thing about my backpack is that it’s made of 100% recyclable materials, which if you didn’t already know, I’m trying to support sustainable fashion more & more.

10. My Espro travel press. This is by far my favorite mug to take around with me. The Espro travel press is perfect for coffee/tea lovers who are always on the go. The best thing about the mug is the built in french press for your coffee, the patented filter system as two filters, leaving all the flavors and none of the grit. The double wall vacuum insulated steel keeps your coffee and tea hot for up to 4-6 hours. I always bring tea bags with me just in case I need my tea fix, so at my photoshoot for Spectrum fair, I was able to enjoy hot tea while getting my makeup done.

Having all these necessities make my work days so much more convenient, fun and easy. I never really realized I had some sort of system for how I approach my work days until I thought about my life as a freelancer and how work has been the past few months. So out of sheer curiosity, what items do you think you absolutely need to survive your work days? :-)

I cannot eat with my hair down, so I always have a hair tie around my wrist. Hehe. :) I got so used to having short hair that it was never a problem before. But now that my hair is actually long enough to touch my food, I make sure that it’s tied up. I don’t have a cute hair tie though.

I work at home too and coffee is my best friend. lol. Messy bun, get things done is my motto. MY hair is so long and thick that I think it gets on the way when I’m working. I need to try working outside at home cos working with pajamas on makes me feel lazy. lol Goodluck on career Camie! :)

Good God, I need some of those hair tie things. How is it that I buy a pack of a hundred plain black ones and can’t find any of them by the end of week??? Also, I love that travel mug. I’m trying to find the perfect one because commuting to work is a 2 hour journey for me. Thanks for sharing, Camie! Making sure to bookmark this!

    Hi Camie!

You seem to work well with your budget given you’re a freelancer and can still afford going to Europe and seeing also that you have equally expensive gadgets that you use at work. Wonder if you have any other ventures like a business on the side? Care to share your financial budgeting tips? Of course, not really showing your income but just a general view on how you budget.

    Love your blog, btw. ;)

Living the freelancer life means getting paid late 80% of the time. Meaning, we finish projects and by the time we get paid, a lot of those projects have bulked up and will be paid to you at the same time. So imagine me not having money for 1-3 months, and come the 4th month, a huge chunk comes in from 3 projects you did 3 months ago. That’s basically what my life is like right now as a freelancer, and for other freelancers too who don’t have side businesses.

When I traveled to Europe, I somehow managed to book projects that would allow me to “unwillingly” save up cause you can’t spend any money that isn’t with you, you know what I mean? For my gadgets like my hard drive, my headphones, my mouse… I bought them all at separate times, and so it’s not like a huge chunk is taken off my monthly expenditures. :)

Also, I forgot to note that I think freelancers are sometimes being pegged as professions that dont make money. It depends on your field, how well youre doing, etc etc. Over the years of working as a blogger, I slowly built up my brand and so I was able to also earn better the more I worked. :)

I noticed your mouse too! What’s the brand and where did you buy it?

    • Reply Camie Juan 6 March 2017 at 10:29 pm

It’s from Apple. It’s the old mouse version, they have a nicer one that’s bluetooth but its way more expensive. HAHA

Can’t leave the house without a hair tie too! Anyway, just wanna let you know that I really like the brands you’re working with. And as a blogger, I really admire you for working with those that you really trust and know that you would use yourself. :) Always looking forward to the content you put out! <3
